Peace that is green!

I just recently read a news article in the Winnipeg Sun regarding the arrest of 19 Greenpeace activists who scaled the walls of a couple Parliament buildings at Parliament Hill. The activists managed to hang huge banners protesting against climate change.
I read the comments on this article and many of them were negative.
I didn't think it was necessary to respond negatively because I guess I find the situation slightly humourous.
This is why:
1) it was a complete breach of security. What the shit? the activists could very well have been terrorists or people that are bad. Security stunk it up on that one.
2) they hung huge banners at Parliament Hill! It's hilarious and clever and I like it.
But I do have mixed feelings about this situation. Greenpeace's actions makes things seem like a game, even though Greenpeace argues it's not, their actions make people not take them seriously. But I do realize this is effective and eye catching and will get the attention of an ignorant government.
All I can say is that, protesting climate change is a good thing and good on Greenpeace for trying to make a difference but it's a tough fight with the world we live in and the governments running it.
AND everyone should just stop calling Greenpeace activists hippies because that's stupid and stereotypical and rude. Get over yourselves, these people are trying to make a difference. Ya their way of making a difference is pretty unconventional but if they were to fall into the masses and not hang those banners Parliament wouldn't be forced to see what a shitty job their doing, hurrah! Ya I'm painfully neutral, but have a great day! :D

I am all that is Twitter... NOT

I created a Twitter account today.

It was exciting at first, but then things got a little disappointing. Ya I began "following" my friends, which sounds weird, following friends... odd. Anways so I thought, "well I love musicians so let's "follow" them."

The thing is, when I looked up Dave Grohl, he hadn't "tweeted" for months. When I looked up Feist, I couldn't find her, when I looked up thee Neal Snikeris, I couldn't find him either so now I'm just disappointed and frankly a little "tweeted" out.

AND when I look up a celebrity and don't know which is the real one to follow, anxiety arises in which I would rather avoid.I don't want to be following some random Josh Homme or Emily Haines, thanks. So I'll just avoid following others altogether... hmmm.

But to everybody who followed me, thanks! It is encouraging and it does make my Twitter world more exciting.

I suppose my venture into the land of Twitter will eventually become more enjoyable once things start rolling and I find more friends and such. Otherwise, have a fantastic day and good for you, good for you people who have conquered Twitter.

I'm not bitter...

I suppose like anything, it'll take some getting used to... O how I love Phoenix, I think I'll keep my Phoenix cd in my cd player and scrap the new mixes... ya that's right, my cd player.

What a Perfect Friday, except...

So as I walked home from the bus stop today, I was enjoying the bright, warm sun, the crisp fall air, and the fact that my jacket was actually not buttoned up. Right when I got home, I went out to my balcony to soak up what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon. Gazing around at the bare trees and clear sky, my delightful scene was destroyed by what floated by in the river.
I really don't know what it was, it wasn't ice because it was plus 10 out, so I assumed it was some sort of sewer dumpage or garbage or something that isn't natural. All I can say is that the river was and is very nasty, and with me having such a nice view, it is really too bad I have to watch the "shitty" river flow by my apartment everyday. Imagine a city where the rivers were clean and dead things and sewer were not flowing in it. That would be amazing, but I guess you gotta put up with it all. Man kind did it right, I guess we can't complain... eventhough I wish the river never got this bad... damn it Winnipeg and surrounding areas.. what have we done..!

Remember this?

As I was walking back from a downtown club yesterday evening, and which was not an overly good club at that, Mystique... I was reminded of how lucky we all are that it hasn't snowed yet. Yes the evenings are a bit crisp and chilly but the grass is still somewhat green and the temperatures still being delightfully nice. Yeah! Winnipeg is actually having some enjoyable temperatures? I can't believe it... Do you all remember when it was the first snowfall of the year and it was a blizzard? I remember everyone was still out and about, going to bars that night, driving to parties out of town and me, I sat at home. I called er quits. I got my blanket and curled up on the couch preparing myself for the long and bone chilling winter. But then the next couple days, the snow was gone and my flats were busted out and my winter boots put away for below 0 temperatures. Be Happy Winnipeg because this is the only time of year that the temperatures have actually be on our side for once!

The Last Week of October... already? yeesh

So it's the last week of October. Can you believe it?! I was sitting around at the beginning of October laughing because I had so much time to prepare for Halloween, ya right! Halloween just came out of no where and now I'm scrambling around to get an outfit and anything else needed for the festivities. What are you being for Halloween? I have no idea what I am being yet.. any suggestions???? No I can't be Aphrodite, I was Athena last year...
Last year, I carved a pumpkin with my best friend and it was awesome. I suggest you do it. carve that pumpkin and cook those seeds. Its a great wholesome experience and you'll be glad you did it. It'll ease your mind.

Blogging and Me

I grew up in a small town, and came to Winnipeg to attend school just over two years ago. I remember when I first moved here, I had to experience alot of things on my own as I didn't really know anyone or anything for that matter. Bus routes, finding my way around the school, the city in general, were worlds unknown to me. Little did I know, these new experiences would open doors to many more new experiences. Now I think back to when I was in highschool, and all I knew was my hometown. I am grateful and I love it. I love to see the difference in my life, in myself, from years ago to now. The reason I am doing some self evaluating for you to see is because I am going to share my opinion of blogging from a country girl, small town perspective. I want you to see that me, an ignorant 18 year old at the time, came to the big city and my eyes were opened to a whole new world that I would have never experienced if it wasn't for the new friends and opportunities I came upon on my journeys.

I will admit, I had no idea what blogging really was and what it consisted of before a month and a half ago. I am aware that this makes me look like an amateur compared to everyone else out there with two or three blogs that they have been upkeeping and writing on everyday for the past five years. But in reality, alot of people can relate to me, alot of people don't have a clue what a blog is and what it consists of.

I will give you a comparison so you can piece this together for yourself. I laugh because as I make fun of keeners, I am beginning to find out that I am a keener as well. Keener = over the top, smart person who studies during free time. Right now, I am just beginning to feel the keener inside me, I am not full blown yet. Just like me being an amateur blogger, I laugh, but really, in time, I won't be that baby anymore, I will be that five year blogger that checks their page all the time and responds to everyone's comments. This is not a bad thing, for what we have been taught in the past couple months is that in order to have a successful blog, we must up keep it, we must discuss things that involve our audience. And in order to be successful and get good grades, one must have some sort of keener inside them. I am sure everyone does.

Blogging to me, is an excellent way of communicating with new people. A blog is there for you to customize to yourself; this web page represents you as a person. The blog you create presents your ideas and values and opinions to the world. And if you're lucky, others will see these opinions and take time to read them and comment on them. Whether they agree or disagree, your blog gets action and you get some conversation. You relate to people, you disagree with people, you write on other's blogs. You can start controversys with a click of your mouse, you can make new friends, you can start a group, you can stand up for something or someone. It is really quite brilliant, and me, like many others, had no idea that a blog could produce so much opinion, so much controversy and ultimately, so much power.

So, in conclusion, blogs are a way for you to grasp the world and interpret it. After you grasp and interpret, voice your feelings and let the world respond. Blogging was just another way for me to see new perspectives, to hold on to the world and influence it in some way. Do it, grasp everything you can get a grip on, I recommend checking out the links I provided.

Buyer Beware - Gym Memberships!!

Who knew gyms were so sneaky? You know that contract you sign when you get a membership? Well there can be a heck of alot of things hidden in there! In Advertising class, my group, consisting of Shelley, Lindsey, Lauren and I, dove into the gym agreement world looking for answers. We started off by picking four major gyms located in Winnipeg. Curves, Shapes, The Y, and Good Life Fitness. Our goal was to get a contract from each gym, get information on what each gym offered, the costs of each membership, cancellation policies, extras and what the all around customer service was like. We each chose a gym and went there individually, inquiring about getting a membership.
We surveyed 60 random people whom we found in various areas throughout our campus. The survey included what gyms they have been and are a member of, as well as a rating of customer service at the specific gym and what kind of experience they had exiting their memberships.
Out of the research we did, the experiences we had at our specifc gyms and the opinions we got from various sources, we came to the conclusion that Shapes is deceitful and has bad customer service, Curves was mediocre, Good Life Fitness was good and The Y was great. The Y was the only gym that would give us a copy of their memberships.
So watch out when you sign contracts! You could have trouble cancelling your membership like many did at Shapes, or have money automatically taken out of your account, or get charged something extra that you don't know about, or only have access to your gym on a specific day at a specific time. Be aware of what is offered and what you're being charged because a signed agreement is legally binding and it'll be helll in a hand basket trying to get out of that if you're being swindled.

So aren't they supposed to be caring for these kids? or whats the deal here....

A recent article in the Winnipeg Free Press has pushed my mad button. Mike McIntyre recently published an article regarding the way CFS or Child and Family Services has been dealing with what Winnipeg is considering, one of its most "at-risk" youths. A girl who is under 15 and has been floating from group home to group home, has not yet been positively affected by CFS who are supposed to be helping and benefiting her. In the article, the girl's mother is basically crying out for help after CFS handled the situation terribly. The mother just wanted help and now her daughter is in the hands of CFS who are not keeping tabs on her and not reinforcing stability in her life in which she most likely needs. The mother is fearing for her daughter's life after the young girl ran away numerous times and was labelled a "missing person" over and over again. So what is going on here? Why are these kids being neglected? We depend on these services to take care of these kids, keep them safe and make the right decisions for them. In my opinion, CFS should step it up and stop letting missing kids happen, stop letting kids be put in danger and start doing their job as a protector of the youth of Manitoba.

The Rollercoaster That Is, My Life, or our lives right now...

I am sure all of us CreComms are feeling it, we're seein it in our day planners, as the pages fill up. The heat is on, and we are sweatin. This week is a heck of a week... Baking, pitches, presentations, blogs, personality profiles, heck the list is gettin long! BUT, these are all just the twists and turns of the roller coaster that is our lives. These definately aren't bad things. Look at the roller coaster metaphor, when your on the ride, you're like, "whoa," and maybe you get a bit nervous, and you might sweat a little. Your face may go a shade of tomato red and you scream, BUT, once again, it's enjoyable because by the time you get off the ride, you're like, "hey, that wasn't so bad, that was actually fun, i'd even do it again." SO, in conclusion, we should all just hold on and ya, let out a scream in the privacy of our own homes if ya haven't already but just keep on keepin' on because this is what we are here to do, we are meant to be here and we're a team. so good job everybody! and a big pat on the back to the success of the bake sale!

o my

what does everybody think about Prime Minister Stephen Harper busting out his piano skills?! it's so random!

I have mixed feelings. I think he looks harmless enough without having to showcase his mediocre piano skills! And he sings too! my goodness, I think it may put a negative spin on his public image. As Canadians, I believe we struggle to project a strong, independant image. Stephen Harper playing the piano and not even that well, doesn't help anything really... what do you think?

Week 3 or 4?

My how time has passed, I find myself, unconsciously, adapting to Cre Comm and now that I've realized this, I am very happy. Things are beginning to move along well, they are becoming more enjoyable and comfortable and I like it all, I'm beginning to open up and embrace the moments I do have at school and afterwards. Everyone is so fabulous and I appreciate it all, and today's creative writing class was absolutely hilarious, Shelley's nameless doll, so funny, etc. So many more good times to come, im excited. cheers friends :)

Creativity

One thing I have learned upon my attendance here at Red River is that it is like Hogwarts here and by Hogwarts I mean, it is like we are a special breed, hand picked, like we are meant to be here. The teachers want us to flourish, this school is for us to grow and learn and push ourselves to our limits so we can succeed and prosper. It is absolutely amazing and I love it. For those who attended university beforehand, you'd know the difference between Red River and U of M or U of W. There is a huge difference. Creativity is praised, nobody is ignored. SO, I have a really good friend who has an extremely creative brother who I really enjoy watching grow and tap into his creative callings. He is just a young guy but I think all of us can appreciate this clever video. For those who enjoy Hawksley Workman, this one is for you.

Hello all,
A common question among most Cre Comm students is what major we will choose within our first year or so here.. It has stumped me. I first began with journalism. It looked great and I do enjoy news etc etc. After our first week I decided not to. I am in the middle of deciding why I got "turned off" of Journalism, maybe its because in our first week here it was highlighted that Journalism was on its way out... and Im sure many can argue otherwise, but it just seems like a pretty tough career to fully succeed in. I do give the utmost props to the handful of students who do choose journalism, I support them fully for they know they can do it, they know they can succeed. I suppose why I am ranting about this is because many do give up. Now you would think I am a giver upper, but I just lost interest, maybe its our Journalism class that ruined my expectations... but that doesn't matter... I am in this program to find something I will enjoy for the rest of my life and that is why I am ranting about Journalism. For those who, like me, thought it was hopeless by the end of the first week I will argue it is not... If you are interested in it and enjoy it then go for it! You will succeed if you put yourself out there, if you work hard and if you remember to love it, make it your own, make yourself known, kick butt, take names, rock the world.
Now I sound like a hypocrite to most for I stroked Journalism off my list of careers, BUT I recommend not to stroke it off if you really had your heart set on it, if you came here to be that Journalism grad. I think you can do it, be positive! Make sure, whatever you choose, you will have a career in something you will enjoy for the rest of your life. And, well, if worst comes to worst, just go with our teacher's opinions that even if you graduate with a diploma in Public Relations, you may very well end up in advertising and so on.
Just a thought from Nicki D, enjoy!

My First Blog Ever

Well my intentions for the future of my blog is based on my own concerns regarding the city we live in, Peg City, and my likes and dislikes regarding restaurants, music and people in general. It should be alot of fun and I am looking forward to voicing my opinion, putting a different perspective on things and opening other's minds to the fabulous world around them. Yay to the future, hurrah to change.
